Passive exoskeleton
An exoskeleton that redistributes loads or stores and releases energy through springs, elastic elements, or mechanical structures without a battery-powered motor.
Why this term matters
Passive systems can be lighter and simpler than powered devices, but they do not provide motorized propulsion. Comparing them on peak motor power or battery range would be meaningless.
How to evaluate it in a product claim
- Identify the spring, elastic, damper or counterbalance mechanism.
- Check which posture or movement activates the support.
- Look for adjustment ranges, inspection intervals and replaceable wear parts.
- Assess where the device redirects force instead of assuming that load disappears.
What it should not be confused with
Passive does not mean force-free or universally low risk. A passive system can apply substantial force and can restrict movement or transfer load when it is poorly matched to the wearer or task.
